One of the many benefits which come with Accoya wood is that it is dimensionally stable. This means that it is less susceptible to warping and twisting over time. In fact, Accoya matches and in most cases exceeds the stability and performance of some of the very best tropical hardwoods making it ideally suited to outdoor use. A reduction in shrinkage and swelling ultimately leads to a trouble-free service life for your brand new Accoya Greenhouse.
At Cultivar we love wood; it brings warmth and character to our greenhouses. Accoya is naturally beautiful and adds something to Cultivar Greenhouse range that you will not find with other greenhouse manufacturers.
Accoya is 30% more thermally efficient than typical hardwoods. Thermal efficiency is vital in this industry, and our Accoya Greenhouses are purposefully designed to ensure that the environment within the greenhouse remains cooler on hot days and warmer on cold days. This helps provide you with a more comfortable working environment and also ensures better growing conditions for your plants.
Accoya is considered by many to be the wood of the future due to the outstanding performance benefits that it offers. It is by no means the cheapest hardwood available, but by using this material we are ensuring that the high quality Accoya greenhouses we build for our customers benefit from all of these features and that our customers receive a product which will be unmatched elsewhere.
We work hard to ensure that the Accoya greenhouses we sell to customers are up to the highest possible standards. That’s why each batch of Accoya wood we received is subjected to stringent tests to make sure that we achieve consistent levels of quality from surface to core:
Durability Class | Definition | Life expectancy | Timber |
---|---|---|---|
1 | Very durable | Over 25 years | Accoya, Teak |
2 | Durable | 15 - 25 years | Oak, Red Cedar |
3 | Moderately durable | 10 - 15 years | Larch |
4 | Low durable | 5 years | Pine, Spruce |
The longevity of wood is measured on a scale of durability. Accoya has the highest rating for durability, a Durability Class 1, which puts it ahead of species such as European Oak, Western Red Cedar and Iroko. An example of another wood with a durability of Class 1 is Teak.
Unlike ordinary woods every batch of Accoya is tested prior to being dispatched to ensure a consistent quality is achieved. This, perhaps, is one of the reasons Accoya are able to guarantee their wood for fifty years when being used outdoors. Not that it applies to our glasshouses but Accoya also guarantee their wood for 25 years when put in the ground.
To retain the newness we choose to brush the Accoya with a light translucent coating to ensure it reaches you in good condition. A further demonstration that we go the extra mile to ensure our glasshouses stand head and shoulders above the rest. Performance aside Accoya is sustainably sourced and FSC certified, so it has green credentials too.
When we deliver your Accoya Greenhouse, you will note the generally light blond colouring of this treated timber. You will also be sure to notice that it is remarkably clear of imperfections such as knots which are common with most other hardwoods.
However, like all natural products the Accoya will still display some surface markings and signs of resin reaching the surface. Some of the timbers may also display a darker face than others. This is completely normal and not a cause for concern. In fact, many of our customers find that it only adds to the aesthetic appeal of our highly sought after Accoya Greenhouse range.
Over time, you will notice that you Accoya greenhouse achieves an attractive grey patina. At times, this may be patchy, but is ultimately a factor which is beyond our control as it occurs on account of the location and outdoor conditions that your greenhouse faces. Where you position your greenhouse will also have an effect on this, so do bear this in mind when deciding where you would like it based.
Of course, one of the benefits of Accoya Greenhouses is that the timber is guaranteed to last 50 years. This is one of the main reasons that we’ve chosen to adopt this wood in our construction processes, so that we can guarantee longevity for our customers and products which are fit for purpose.
Of course, over time the gradual greying will merge into a more even finish. You will be able to remove or restrict some of the uneven patchiness yourself by simply washing down your Accoya Greenhouse with a soft brush or cloth and warm soapy (washing up liquid) water.
You may also like to add a surface treatment to your Accoya greenhouse in order to slow down the aging process. We recommend using Osmo UV Protection Oil in the 420 Clear Satin Finish if you choose to do this which contains a blend of natural oils including: sunflower oil, soya oil, thistle and linseed oil.

After many years fostering two of Britain’s largest glasshouse companies, gratefully still thriving, I have joined together with my son and long time brilliant technical associate to form a design led creative team.
For the last 15 years I’ve been designing and making the most desirable glasshouses. But with Cultivar an awful lot of knowledge and skill has gone into the design. We’ve achieved a glasshouse with exceptional ventilation, evenly distributed with no hot or cold spots.
I’m the part of the team that understands the needs and desires of gardeners and more importantly plants. Tim makes sure that every component is carefully manufactured whilst my father makes sure the business machine is well oiled.
